Worldly Cage

“No matter the strength of their wings, most never leave their cages.”

All things that begin
must come
to an inevitable end.
A cry of distress,
in an unfamiliar world
and hence begins life.

Some live for a 100 years
without being alive
for even
a second of it.
We are our own undoing.
Blessing or tragedy?

Stop and smell the roses,
they say.
Maybe I should
become that rose
and carry that beauty
within me.

I wish to forge
my own path.
Untethered, free and wild.
Liberated from this worldly cage,
and when Death finally finds me
may it find me alive.

The other day, I came across an African proverb : “When death comes to find you, may it find you alive.”

We spend a lot of our lives being held back by trying to become what we think others expect us to be. We let ourselves be trapped in a cage.

Our soul knows what it wants. At this very moment, it’s speaking to you. Listen. Then go do it, grab it, live it.

Something went wrong with my WP a few days ago, and this got posted before I was done editing it. I removed it as soon as it happened, but a few of you had already read it and left comments. I’m sorry I had to delete that post because it just wasn’t ready. This is the final and improved version!

Hey EF, yes it is! It takes courage to be truly alive in a world like ours. It is never ever easy. But then, if it was, it’d probably not be as liberating or freeing. I hope you and I find ways to be ‘alive’. Have a happy day. 🌹

Hi HS, you are so kind! I am so delighted that you thought so and had a good read. Surviving is what we do on a daily basis, living is what we should be seeking, or so I think. Thank you for taking the time to read and for the kind words. Have a great day. 🌺

Wonderful how you wove in this proverb. This is very much true of this “worldly cage” that exists, and which is actually an artificial cage, but it takes a long time to realize that. Though the quicker you find that out the better. Perhaps 90% of the cage is self-imposed. A very deep and reflective piece as everyone said above. Good work!

Hi Benjamin! Yes, we put unnecessary pressure on ourselves so often that we don’t realize that life isn’t meant to be difficult always. Sometimes, it’s easy. I am so happy to hear that you enjoyed this one. I fell in love with the proverb just as soon as I read it! Have a brilliant day. 🌺

This is a wonderful post Rishika, and so very true. so many times we can find ourselves living day to day but not really alive. The responsibilities of day to day living can get the best of us and we just race around never stopping to notice anything around us, and forgetting to ask ourselves, “Am I truly feeling alive.”

Hey Michele, yes I agree with you. Most days, we are unable to be truly alive beneath the burden of these responsibilities. Thank you so much for taking the time to read and for your thoughtful comment. I hope you have a happy day. 🌼

Such an amazing thought Rishika. Often we tend to get absolved in the worldly processes that we forget ourselves and to live for ourselves. This is an excellent reminder that whatever happens, whatever one may achieve, if you didn’t live your limited time here, you cannot enjoy what may come beyond. 😇

Hey Harsh, yes, it’s so easy to lose track of what truly matters while we remain forever busy in our schedules and routines. Exactly! Thank you for taking the time to read and comment. Your words never fail to encourage me. Have a wonderful day. 🌼

I too have had such problems with the editor and published posts before they are ready! I revert them to drafts, finish editing, and publish when ready.

I love the freedom and hope in this piece! It may be a poem about the burdens we carry, but there is a lot in the knowledge that we live. I too wish to meet death with as much life as possible and pulsing memories of a life well lived. 🙂
